A totem is an object or animal that is believed by a particular society to have spiritual significance and that is adopted by it as an emblem. Different kinds of totem poles that have other meanings. Some are used to welcome or scare off strangers. Some celebrate a special occasion like a wedding. Others are memorials to remember an important member of the tribe.
